BALTIMORE, Md. -- After leading the No. 2 Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team to its highest national ranking in program history, six Captains were celebrated for their individual efforts so far this season as the squad was well-represented on the Midseason All-American Teams, which were announced by Inside Lacrosse on Friday morning.
Headlining the decorated contingent,
Andrew Cook,
Phoenix Hines,
Dylan Rice, and
Max Wayne collected first-team plaudits. The four honorees on the top squad marked the most by any program in the nation. Meanwhile,
Campbell Pozin hauled in second-team accolades for his work this year, while
Warner Cabaniss garnered third-team nods.
After joining the Captains following a two-year stint at Richmond, Cook has been a lethal addition to Christopher Newport's midfield unit. The Mechanicsville, Virginia native ranks fourth in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 38 goals, including a league-high seven man-up tallies. He has registered at least two points in every game this season while boasting nine hat-tricks, including a six-goal eruption against No. 16 Williams on March 30.
Hines has continued to torment the opposition with another dominant campaign as Christopher Newport's leading long-stick midfielder. His 40 caused turnovers this year rank first in the conference and seventh in the entire NCAA. That also places him fifth on the program's all-time single-season list. Overall, the Ashburn, Virginia native has multiple takeaways in 11 of his outings, including five in victories over Roanoke on February 12 and Grove City on March 2.
Leading the way on the attack, Rice has remained one of the nation's most effective offensive threats. He currently ranks eighth in the NCAA with 74 points. Showcasing a well-balanced skill set, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native slots second in the league with 48 goals and fourth with 26 assists. He also matched his own single-game program record with 10-point outings in wins over Roanoke on February 12 and Whittier on March 27.
Rounding out the first-team honorees, Wayne has been a stabilizing force on the back line. Honored as the USA Lacrosse Preseason Defenseman of the Year, he has more than lived up to that billing in 2022. The Ashburn, Virginia native has 37 caused turnovers, which ranks 10th in the NCAA and sixth on the program's all-time single-season list. He has at least one takeaway in all 13 games, including six in battles against Grove City on March 2 and No. 19 Ursinus on March 9.
Equally impactful on the defensive side of the ball, Pozin has made his mark as a short-stick specialist while also starring as a wing on faceoffs. The Virginia Beach native ranks eighth in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 40 ground balls while also registering seven takeaways. Making his mark on the offensive end as well, he also has seven points, including three in a nationally-ranked victory over No. 10 Gettysburg on March 18.
Earning national accolades during a dominant debut campaign, Cabaniss has burst onto the scene in 2022. The first-year phenom has served as the squad's top faceoff specialist while ranking 17th in the entire NCAA with a .664 winning percentage. That currently stands as the highest single-season mark in program history. The Richmond, Virginia native has also collected 86 ground balls, which ranks fifth in school lore.
Aided by the Midseason All-Americans, Christopher Newport currently stands at 13-0 while holding down the No. 2 spot in the USILA National Coaches Poll. The Captains will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they host No. 1 Salisbury at Jennings Family Stadium.
