Andrew Cook and Warner Cabaniss Sweep Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week Awards

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After leading the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team to a 17-7 victory over Salisbury on Saturday, Andrew Cook and Warner Cabaniss have swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of Week Awards.

The honors are the first for both standouts. Meanwhile, Cook became the fourth different Captain to earn the Offensive Player of the Week award this season, while Cabaniss became the fifth different defensive honoree.

Piecing together another dominant performance on faceoffs, Cabaniss controlled possession throughout the showdown with Salisbury. The freshman won 18 of his 26 battles while scooping up a game-high eight ground balls. His 18 total victories marked the most by a Captain against a nationally-ranked opponent since All-American Tony Cruz won 20 against No. 5 York (Pa.) on April 22, 2017.

After winning nine of the 14 faceoffs in the first half, Cabaniss was nearly unstoppable following the break. Helping the Captains flip a two-goal edge into a 10-goal advantage over the final 30 minutes, the Richmond native won nine of his 12 battles in the second half, including a run of five straight in the early part of the fourth quarter.

So far this season, Cabaniss ranks 18th in the NCAA with a .667 faceoff percentage. That also stands as the highest single-season mark in school history. Additionally, his 94 ground balls place him fifth on the all-time charts, just 13 shy of the program record.

Capitalizing on the offensive end, Cook was a lethal force from his perch on the midfield unit against the Sea Gulls. During the contest, he unloaded a game-high four goals. That marked his 10th hat-trick of the season, including his fifth against a nationally-ranked foe. It also was his sixth consecutive multi-goal effort and his third straight appearance with at least four tallies.

Setting the tone early, Cook uncorked a pair of goals in the first quarter, including the go-ahead strike that gave the Captains a lead they would never relinquish. Later, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native added another bullet in the third quarter before polishing off the afternoon with his fourth goal in the final stanza to help lock up the double-digit triumph.

Aided by his work on Saturday, Cook now ranks fourth in the conference with 42 goals. That also equals the most by a midfielder in program history and the seventh-highest total by any Captain in school lore.

Cook, Cabaniss, and the rest of the Captains will return to action on Saturday when Christopher Newport welcomes Mary Washington to town for a 1 p.m. tilt.
