CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team kept up it's hot streak with a third-place finish at The Grant regatta hosted by Washington College (Md.) last weekend. The Captains have now finished in the top-five in each of their last five events including a pair of wins. With it's third place showing, the Captains qualify for the America Trophy which will take place at King's Point on April 30 and May 1. 

The B division boat led the way in the Grant, with Luke Hayes serving as skipper with crew Ellie McFall and Julia Burns. Hayes sailed with Burns for the first 10 races and then wrapped up the event with McFall stepping into the boat for the final four finishes.  The group finished out of the top-five only once and picked up a pair of wins over the 14 completed races. 

Finishing with 51 points, the B division boat won the division by eight points over host Washington College and edged out the regatta winners from Princeton by 11 total points. Hayes and Burns sailed to wins in races three and six and added three second-place finishes on the first day. 

In A division, a disqualification and a capsize stunted an otherwise terrific performance by Daniel Hodges and Liam Orr for the Captains. The duo still managed a fifth-place showing with 78 points despite the two races they were forced to take the maximum 15-point penalty. In the 12 races they scored in, Hodges and Orr averaged a fourth-place finish and crossed the line first three times in the event. 

As a team, the Captains finished with 129 points and a third-place showing. That mark was just 19 points behind Princeton for the winning score while Washington (Md.) finished second with 112 total points.

This weekend, CNU Sailing will participate in the Sailpack Oriental Coed Fleet Race.
