Captains Sail to Top Five Finish at SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate Regatta

ORIENTAL, N.C. -- In the team's final tune-up prior to the MAISA Conference Championship next weekend, the America Trophy, the Christopher Newport sailing team captured a fifth-place finish at the SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate in North Carolina. In a fleet of 20 teams, the Captains finished in the top-25% after wrapping up the 11-race regatta with 149 total points.

CNU finished in 8th place in A division and snagged a 5th place showing in B division.

The A division boat was sailed by Daniel Hodges with crew Liam Orr and the Captains' duo finished with 85 points. They finished out out of the top-ten only twice in 11 races and captured a regatta-high second place finish in the ninth race of the event.

In B division, Luke Hayes sailed with Ellie McFall for the first nine races and then paired with Carson Rozell for the final rotation. Hayes guided the Captains' boat to a fifth-place showing with 64 points. McFall and Hayes captured six straight top-five efforts to start the event and never finished out of the top ten. With Rozell in the boat, Hayes scored 15 points in two races with a fourth-place finish to wrap up the two-day event.

As a team, the Captains finished just nine points behind South Carolina for fourth place. The host N.C. State Wolfpack won the event with 50 points.

Christopher Newport will next compete in the America Trophy.
