FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After piecing together a pair of historic efforts for the Christopher Newport track & field teams at the Colonial Relays on Friday,
Kaitlyn Ardrey and
John Vogel swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week awards.
The weekly honor is the second straight for Vogel after he was previously celebrated on March 28. Meanwhile, Ardrey has now been honored three times in her career after earning a pair of awards as a junior on March 16 and April 6, 2021.
Headlining the decorated contingent, Ardrey rewrote the record books in the women's 10,000. At Zable Stadium on Friday evening, the senior star completed the race in 36:40.52. That shattered the previous school record of 37:04.86, which had been set by Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Aimee Gibbs in 2002. It also cut over 30 seconds off the previous league standard of 37:17.88, which York (Pa.)'s Jess Miller established in 2015.
Overall this year, Ardrey's clocking places her first in the league by over a minute and a half. It also slots her first in the South Region and 13th on the national charts.
On the men's side, Vogel was electric in the 3000-steeplechase. During the Colonial Relays, he completed the event in 9:19.70. That marked the second-fastest clocking in school history, falling just shy of David Woodson's record-setting run of 9:10.26 in 2010.
In addition to vaulting him up the program leaderboard, Vogel's time was also the fastest in the league this year by over 14 seconds. Additionally, it placed him third in the South Region and 12th in the NCAA.
Ardrey, Vogel, and the rest of their teammates will return to action on Friday for the start of the New Captains Classic at TowneBank Stadium.
