SPARKS, Md. -- For the first time in program history, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team boasts a pair of All-Americans as
Kelsey Winters secured third-team accolades, while
Kendall Krause hauled in honorable mention plaudits from
USA Lacrosse Magazine.
With her award, Winters is the first player in program history to earn three All-American citations. Previously, she picked up second-team nods from the IWLCA and third-team plaudits from
USA Lacrosse Magazine in 2021.
Meanwhile, Krause joins Winters as the only Captains in school history to earn national recognition from
USA Lacrosse Magazine. Along with the current standouts, former legends Meaghan Galvin and Sarah Culver were previously celebrated as All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Anchoring the attack throughout the 2022 campaign, Winters was electric during her junior season. Serving as one of the nation's leading facilitators, she handed out 66 assists, which ranked eighth among all players in the NCAA during the regular season. That total also established a new school record, shattering the previous standard of 55 set by Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Meghan Harkey in 2011.
In addition to setting up her teammates, Winters also deposited 29 goals and finished with a league-high 95 total points. That also marked the fifth-most by a Captain in program history.
Torching the record books, Winters set a new single-game school standard with 13 points in a win over Moravian on February 26. Her 10 assists against the Greyhounds also tied the program mark. Additionally, the Harwood, Maryland native added three other double-digit point performances during the season, including 12 in the season opener at Virginia Wesleyan on February 18. That set a new school standard for points in a road tilt.
Consistent throughout the year, Winters contributed at least one point in 18 of her appearances and had five or more on eight occasions. For her work, she was a four-time Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week and garnered first-team All-League accolades at the end of the year.
While Winters was starring on the attack, Krause was a menace on the midfield unit. Frustrating the opposition in all facets of the game, she ranked among the league-leaders in nearly every statistical category. She wrapped up the regular season slotted second in the conference with 33 ground balls, sixth with 38 goals, and eighth with 18 caused turnovers.
Incredibly, the first-team All-Conference selection finished the year as the only player in the league with at least 30 goals and 15 takeaways. Additionally, she became just the sixth Captain to reach both of those totals in a single campaign.
On the offensive end, Krause was a reliable contributor throughout the year. The Ellicott City, Maryland native scored at least once in 14 of her appearances and posted two or more points on 11 occasions. Among her finest moments, she registered five hat-tricks, including three-goal eruptions against No. 4 Washington & Lee on March 19 and No. 15 Messiah on April 2. She also added seven points in a win over Kean on March 5.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Krause collected a ground ball in 17 of her outings and secured the 100th of her career against Meredith on April 20. She also came through with at least two takeaways in four of her appearances, including three against Lebanon Valley on March 12.
Aided by the efforts of Krause and Winters, Christopher Newport climbed as high as 22nd in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll and advanced to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship for the second straight year.
