MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Making a push for a berth in the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships, Alyssa Roach jumped up the national leaderboard in the heptathlon with an incredible performance during the Mount Olive Combined Events at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

During the two-day competition, Roach established a new PR while accumulating 4,405 points in the heptathlon. That vaulted her into the top-20 on the national charts and marked the fourth-best score in Christopher Newport history.

Along with placing her among the top standouts in the country, Roach's performance also marked the finest showing by any student-athlete in the NCAA South Region since former Christopher Newport legend Briana Sutton compiled a score of 4,524 while placing 10th at the national championships in 2017.

Headlining her showcase, Roach shaved over a second off her previous PR in the 200 after crossing the line in 25.82. She also missed her personal-best in the 800 by only a fraction of a second after completing the race in 2:30.22, which placed her second in the field.

In other events, the third-year star also notched season-best marks in the 100-hurdles (14.52) and javelin (21.23 meters). Her clocking in the hurdles also bumped her into the top-25 nationally entering the weekend.

Rounding out the competition, Roach cleared 1.51 meters in the high jump, added an 8.77-meter heave in the shot put, and landed a 5.16-meter leap in the long jump.

Roach is looking to make a return trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after placing 17th in the country in the 100-hurdles last year. She also came in 12th in the pentathlon during the indoor nationals in March.

The Christopher Newport track & field program will continue a busy week with an appearance at the Mount Olive First Chance Qualifier and ECAC Championships on Saturday before heading to the VCU Final Qualifier on Sunday.
