GENEVA, Ohio -- Alyssa Roach will represent the Christopher Newport track & field program at the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week as the third-year star qualified in the heptathlon and will challenge for national supremacy in the combined event at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio beginning on May 26.
Roach enters the title meet seeded 18th in the country after posting a personal-best score of 4,405 at Mount Olive on May 12. Her quest for a national crown will start next Thursday with the 100-hurdles beginning at 12:30 p.m. The high jump, shot put, and 200 will round out the first day of the competition.
Friday's action will begin at 11 a.m. with the long jump. Later in the afternoon, Roach and the rest of the heptathletes will cap off the two-day gauntlet with the javelin and 800.
Making a return trip to the national meet, Roach previously competed in the 100-hurdles during last year's outdoor competition. Additionally, she is coming off of a 12th-place showing in the pentathlon at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships, which took place in March.
Incredibly, Roach is just the fourth Captain in school history to compete for a national title in the pentathlon and heptathlon during the same calendar year. Previously, only Enuma Ezenwa (2014), Jennifer Westerholm (2015), and Briana Sutton (2017) doubled up in the combined events.
In addition to earning her a spot in the NCAA meet, Roach's score of 4,405 in last week's heptathlon also marked the top showing in the South Region this year. Additionally, it moved her to fourth on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list, slotting her just behind Sutton, Ezenwa, and Westerholm.
Showcasing her well-rounded skill set, Roach won three individual titles during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships earlier this month after sweeping the 100- and 400-hurdles while also snatching the long jump. Her season-best mark of 14.65 in the 100-hurdles also places her 37th on the national charts.
In her three seasons with the Captains, the Yorktown, Virginia native is already a three-time national qualifier, nine-time conference champion, and the reigning USTFCCCA South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
