NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Three members of the Christopher Newport University softball team were honored with All-American awards Tuesday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Senior first baseman Kaitlyn Hasty was named first team, freshman pitcher Jamie Martin second team, and senior outfielder Caitlin Abernethy third team.

For Hasty, it's her third All-American honor and she becomes the first CNU softball player to receive three All-American nods in a career. Hasty previously was named first team as a freshman in 2019 and second team last year after her junior season. The Chesapeake native leads the nation in home runs with 18, and has set a new career school record with 52 homers in her career. She also has driven in 61 runs this season and has 177 for her career, just 14 shy of the school career record. Hasty was both the Player and Freshman of the Year in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2019 and was honored as the National Freshman of the Year. She has been an All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State selection each year of her career.

Martin, a left-handed pitcher from Lorton, Va., is 19-1 and has an earned run average of just 0.95. In 125 innings of work, Martin has struck out 133 batters and walked just 18. The freshman threw a no-hitter in a victory at Mary Washington, and recently did not allow a run in 40.1 consecutive innings, the second-longest shutout string in program history. Martin was named the Freshman of the Year in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, and is a finalist for the National Freshman of the Year honor.

Abernethy, a senior from Prince George, Va., leads the squad in hitting with a .448 batting average. She has also scored 34 times and driven in 27 runs in the leadoff spot of the lineup. Abernethy has been honored with All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State awards during her career, and has posted a .415 career batting average with the Captains.

The trio of All-American awards bring the total to 20 all-time in the 38-year history of the softball program. The 20 All-American nods have been awarded to 15 different Captains, with Hasty (3), Patty Maye Ohanian (2),Sabrina Hill (2) and Jessie Atkinson (2) receiving multiple honors. 

The Captains, 42-1 and top-ranked in the country, are preparing for the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament Finals, which are scheduled to begin Thursday in Salem, Va. CNU will be the top seed and will play Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the eighth seed, at 11 a.m. Thursday to open the eight-team final at the Moyer Softball Complex in Salem.

The Division III All-America teams are voted on by a committee of NFCA member coaches representing the NCAA's 10 regions. They select 18 players for each of three teams, unless there is a tie for a third-team slot, in which case the tied players are both awarded honors. All players recognized as All-Region players were eligible for All-America recognition.
