GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Adrianna DeSantis and
Daniel Ferrante were celebrated for their work both in and out of the classroom as the Christopher Newport track & field standouts were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, which was announced on Thursday afternoon by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The prestigious honor was the second for DeSantis after she was previously named to the All-District Team as a junior in 2021. Meanwhile, Ferrante picked up the award for the first time. He also became the first member of the men's track & field team to secure the accolade since former standout Zach Campbell was celebrated in 2017.
Overall, the Captains were two of 22 total honorees from District 5, which includes student-athletes from 11 different states ranging from Florida to Missouri. They are now eligible for a spot on the Academic All-American Team, which will be announced at the end of June.
Dominating in the sprints, DeSantis lit up the track during another successful season in 2022. The senior speedster secured five All-Conference awards during the year. Among her highlights, she walked away as the league champion in the outdoor 400 after burning the field with a time of 58.95. Eventually, she ranked sixth in the entire South Region in that event after posting a PR of 58.24 at the Williams Final Qualifier in May.
Along with her title-winning performance in the 400, DeSantis was also the runner-up in the outdoor 200. Additionally, she helped the 4x100, 4x400, and indoor Distance Medley Relay squads place second in the league as well. Eventually, she wrapped up her senior campaign ranked first in the conference in the indoor and outdoor 400 as well as the indoor 200.
Incredibly, in her career, the Mohegan Lake, New York native is a 10-time All-Conference honoree and three-time league champion.
Off the track, DeSantis is a perennial Dean's List and Academic All-Conference honoree as a neuroscience major. Compiling a near perfect GPA, she was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the winter.
Starring over longer distances, Ferrante excelled as both a member of Christopher Newport's cross country and track & field squads. During the fall campaign, the sophomore standout secured All-Conference and All-Region accolades for his work on the cross country team. His personal-best mark of 25:43.3 in the 8k at the Paul Short Run also placed him 27th on the school's all-time performance list.
Meanwhile, on the track, Ferrante hauled in awards for his work during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. In the winter, he garnered All-Conference nods after placing second in the 800 at the league championships. Then, in the spring, the Sterling, Virginia native came back and claimed conference titles in both the 800 and 1500.
In just two years with the Captains, Ferrante already stands second on the school's all-time performance list in the outdoor 1500 (3:49.28), fifth in the indoor mile (4:16.38), and seventh in the outdoor 800 (1:53.65).
In the classroom, Ferrante is an Academic All-Conference honoree as a computer science major. He was also named to the USTFCCCA National All-Academic Cross Country Team for his scholarly endeavors in the fall.
