GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Solidifying her spot as one of the most well-rounded student-athletes in Christopher Newport athletics history,
Adrianna DeSantis polished off her tenure by earning Academic All-American accolades after securing third-team plaudits from the College Sports Information Directors of America on Tuesday afternoon.
DeSantis was one of only 45 standouts from across the country to receive the prestigious award, which is bestowed upon student-athletes who have excelled equally in their academic and athletic endeavors. Overall, she is just the third member of the track & field program to earn the honor, joining Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Casey Taylor (1999, 2000) and former legend
Zoe Stauffer (2020, 2021).
Along with being named an Academic All-American, she was previously celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor and Outdoor Women's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of Year.
On the track, DeSantis starred in the sprints. During her senior campaign, she captured the league crown in the outdoor 400, becoming the first Captain to win that title since 2014. Fittingly, she earned first-team All-League accolades for that performance. Overall, she was a five-time All-Conference honoree during the 2021-22 campaign after also bringing home second team plaudits in the indoor Distance Medley Relay and outdoor 200, 4x100, and 4x400.
Dominating the competition throughout the year, DeSantis posted a league-best time of 58.24 in the 400 during the Williams Final Qualifier. That marked the fastest clocking by anyone in the league since 2019. She also slotted first among conference competitors in both the indoor 200 (26.86) and 400 (1:00.38) during the winter season.
For her efforts, she was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week on February 1 and February 7.
Along with her award-winning performance during her senior season, DeSantis was equally successful throughout her collegiate career. In her four years with the Captains, she picked up 11 All-Conference honors and was an All-State selection in 2020. In addition to her league title in the 400 last month, she also won conference championships as a member of the outdoor 4x400 in 2021 and the indoor 4x400 in 2020.
Aided by her work during the league meets, DeSantis helped Christopher Newport win four team championships during her tenure after claiming outdoor titles during each of the past two years and indoor titles in 2020 and 2022.
Meanwhile, off the track, the Mohegan Lake, New York native graduated with a near perfect GPA as a neuroscience major. For her scholarly endeavors, DeSantis hauled in a pair of Academic All-District citations and was a perennial member of the Academic All-Conference team.
