ASHLAND, Va. -- Christopher Newport men's golf secured State Player of the Year recognition for the second straight year and the third time in program history when junior
Alex Price hauled in the honors in a release by the Virginia Sports Informatin Directors (VaSID) on Friday. Price was also joined on the All-State First Team by classmate and 2021 Player of the Year
Robb Kinder as the duo continue their unprecedented success in leading the nationally-ranked Captains.
Price earned first team All-State recognition for the third consecutive year, becoming the first to accomplish that feat in program history. He joins Matt DiSalvo,
Harry Nodwell, and David Rabil as other three-time selections but becomes the first to earn First Team plaudits in each. Kinder is a two-time first team All-State pick after his record-setting 2021 campaign.
This year, Price was named a PING First Team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America to become only the second player in program history to garner All-America recognition three or more times in his career. This season, the junior lefty set the program scoring average record for a single season by finishing with a 72.6 in 26 rounds of play. He now has a CNU record 72.4 career scoring average through 69.5 rounds in his first three years.
Price added five top-ten finishes in nine events including a win in the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate this Spring. He recorded 13 rounds at par or better this year including a record-shattering 54-hole tournament at Jekyll. He fired an 11-under 205 with three straight sub-70 cards.
The Hillsboro, Va. native is the third VaSID State Player of the Year in program history, joining David Rabi (2017) and
Robb Kinder (2021).
Kinder added another outstanding season to collect first team All-State recognition in back-to-back years. Earning second team All-American honors, Kinder led the team at the NCAA Division III National Championships for a second consecutive season. He followed up a runner-up finish in the 2021 event with another spectacular showing at the championship event in 2022. Kinder led the 221-player field in total pars with 50 over 72 holes including one of the finest rounds in program history with 17 pars and one bogey in the final round for a 73.
The CNU veteran is just the second Captain in program history to record multiple sub-300 rounds at the NCAA National Championships and the first since Scott Scovil accomplished the feat in the 1994 and 1996 tournaments. Overall, Kinder averaged 73.3 strokes per round with four top-ten finishes. He added one win and nine rounds at par or better during the season to lower his career average to 73.8, ranking second behind only Price.
The All-State honorees helped CNU qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships, where they made the cut and finished 17th overall.
