NORFOLK, Va. – Behind one of the most successful seasons in Christopher Newport Athletics history, the Captains captured a record 16
th All-Sports Survey title distributed by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). The Captains have won 12 of the last 14 including all 12 years not impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, dating back to the 2008-09 season. The organization announced the award on Wednesday, listing CNU's 76.8% as the highest overall winning percentage of all non-NCAA Division I programs in the state.
Christopher Newport logged the highest winning percentage since 2010-11 and the second best mark in the history of the award, which dates back to 2000-01. It also stands as the second-highest winning percentage in CNU history highlighted by an incredibly dominant run by the CNU women's teams, winning at over 80 percent in 2021-22.
Highlighted by national championship performances from women's soccer and softball, the record-setting 2021-22 campaign saw Christopher Newport register a record-high 695.5 points scored in the Learfield Directors Cup standings. CNU finished 18
th nationally in the annual survey used to determine the top overall collegiate athletic programs in the country and also swept the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Commisioner's Cup awards.
The women's programs combined to go 146-35-1 (.805) while the men's teams managed a 99-38-2 (.719) overall record. Four CNU programs were ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation in their respective national polls during the season as men's lacrosse and women's basketball each joined the aforementioned softball and women's soccer runs. For the sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament, Christopher Newport women's basketball advanced to the Round of 16 and on the men's side, the Captains reached the National Quarterfinals for the third time in the last six seasons. Men's lacrosse made another tremendous run through the season and also finished in the national quarterfinals to help highlight an exceptional campaign across the board.
In Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action, Christopher Newport finished either as conference champion or runner-up in all 18 sports sponsored by the league during the 2021-22 season. The dominant performance includes league titles in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, softball, and volleyball.
The Captains continued their successful season into the NCAA Tournament from start to finish this year. Fourteen of CNU's 21 NCAA sponsored sports reached the postseason in 2021-22 and the Captains posted a combined record in NCAA Tournament play of 27-8-0 for a winning percentage of 77.1 percent.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or Conference in the state of Virginia.
