NEW ORLEANS -- Daniel Ferrante,
Logan Funk, and
John Vogel all secured USTFCCCA National All-Academic Track & Field honors, while the Christopher Newport women's squad was celebrated as a National All-Academic Team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday afternoon.
Ferrante and Funk were honored for the second time this year after the two standouts previously earned a spot on the USTFCCCA National All-Academic Cross Country Team in the fall. Meanwhile, Vogel was recognized for the first time in his career.
In order to receive the prestigious award, student-athletes must hold at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA while ranking in the top-50 nationally in an individual event.
Meanwhile, the entire women's squad was named an All-Academic Team for the 12th consecutive year. That title is bestowed upon all programs that have achieved at least a 3.1 cumulative team GPA through the spring semester.
Headlining the honorees, Funk wrapped up her collegiate career with a tremendous senior campaign. During the year, she won a pair of conference titles, including a record-setting showcase in the indoor 3000. During that event, she captured the league crown in 10:26.82, which established a new championship meet record. Later, in the spring, she came back and won the outdoor 1500 as well.
Along with her league titles, Funk also garnered All-Conference nods as a member of the outdoor 4x400-relay and was an All-Region selection for her work in the 1500. Meanwhile, the Finance major ranked among the national leaders in the indoor 3000. Her PR of 10:12.02 at the South Region Final Qualifier placed her 48th on the NCAA leaderboard.
Equally dominant in the distance events, Ferrante capped off a spectacular sophomore season by winning two league titles at the Coast-to-Coast Conference Outdoor Championships. During the competition, he claimed the 800 in 1:53.65 and the 1500 in 3:53.47. With that performance, he became the first Captain to win a pair of distance titles at the outdoor league meet since 2011.
In addition to his conference crowns, Ferrante also garnered an All-League citation for his work in the indoor 800 and was an All-Region performer in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500. His PR of 3:49.28 in the latter event also ranked 34th in the country and earned the Computer Science major a spot on the All-State team.
Rounding out the award-winners, Vogel came through with an incredible debut campaign. During the year, he was named the VaSID All-State Indoor and Outdoor Track Rookie of the Year. Additionally, he was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet after winning a league title in the 5000. He also garnered All-Conference accolades in the indoor 3000 and outdoor 1500 and 5000.
A four-time All-Region selection, the History major ranked among the South's top performers in the indoor 3000 as well as the outdoor 1500, 5000, and 3000-steeplechase. Vogel's mark of 9:14.63 in the steeplechase at the Virginia Grand Prix ranked 35th in the NCAA, while his PR of 3:50.47 in the 1500 at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic placed him 49th in the country.
