NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Making their first appearance at home this season, the Christopher Newport cross country teams held their own against some of the top programs in the entire region as the men placed fourth and the women came in fifth during the NCAA South Regional Preview on Friday evening at Lee Hall Mansion.
On the women's side, Christopher Newport accumulated 167 points, which stood fifth overall and topped three regionally-ranked programs. The Captains upended No. 6 Catholic, No. 8 Meredith, and No. 10 Southern Virginia during the competition. Meanwhile, the men placed fourth with 135 points, which bested the scores of No. 4 Washington & Lee and No. 6 Catholic.
Headlining the meet, Christopher Newport's top-three men all registered personal-bests in the 8k. Leading the way,
Nathanael Ferrante came in 20th overall with a time of 25:36.3. That not only shaved three seconds off his previous PR, but it also vaulted him to 22nd on the program's all-time 8k charts.
Rounding out the history-makers,
Daniel Ferrante and
Nick Tolarchyk also posted top-30 times for the Captains. Ferrante finished 25th with a 25:40.7 clocking, which cut over two seconds off his previous PR and moved him to 25th on the school's all-time performance list. Shortly thereafter, Tolarchyk crossed in 25:50.5, which sliced five seconds off his personal-best. That clocking also placed him 27th in the field on Friday and bumped him to 30th in program history.
Following the squad's top-three performers,
John Vogel was 34th overall in 26:01.8, while
Luke Hawkins also added a PR after finishing 47th in 26:36.5. Rounding out the top-seven,
Luke Tompkins came in 62nd in 27:08.9, and
Chaney Arick made his collegiate debut with a 27:52.3 mark. That placed him 69th overall.
For the women,
Madi Rawlings threw down the top time in the 6k after finishing 22nd in 23:45.3, which chopped over a full minute off her previous course-best of 24:50.0 set at last year's CNU Invitational. Among other veterans,
Eliza Dana and
Lex McGrail also posted their finest efforts on the course at Lee Hall Mansion. Dana finished 31st in 24:25.8, while McGrail was 44th in 24:57.5. Meanwhile, freshman
Megan Smith led the squad's newcomers with a 24:54.2 clocking, which placed her 41st overall.
Rounding out the top-five,
Adalyn Perez set a new 6k PR with a time of 25:31.8. That obliterated her previous personal-best of 26:19.0 and ranked 58th on Friday. Shortly thereafter,
McKenzie Hurley came in 64th (25:45.5), and
Josie Brumfield was 69th (25:56.0).
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 30 when the Captains take part in the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
