NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following her first career hat trick at Widener on Sunday afternoon, Christopher Newport senior
Sarah Smith has been selected the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
With Smith leading the offense, the Captains are off to a 6-0-1 start to the season while extending the team's unbeaten streak to 30 games. Smith has seven goals and one assist for 15 total points through the first seven games this season, including her three-goal outburst on Sunday afternoon.
This week, the Captains earned a 3-2 win at Swarthmore College before handing Widener University a 5-0 walloping, much to the aid of Smith's hat trick. In the game, she scored what would prove to be the eventual gamewinner in the 11th minute off a feed from
Emily Talotta; then, she added two goals in less than a five-minute span during the second half for her second and third legs of the hat trick.
Smith scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute and then registered her third strike off an assist by rookie
Molly Seventko in the 59th minute. The effort came as part of a dominating performance by the Captains, outshooting Widener by a final tally of 33-0 including 16-0 shots on-goal.
In the two-game week, Smith took 11 shots, including five on-net. She ranks second in the league in scoring, with 15 points, and has logged seven career game-winning goals.
With her selection, she becomes the first CNU player not named
Riley Cook to garner Offensive Player of the Week honors since October 7, 2019 when Madison Cochran collected the certificate. She joins
Jill McDonald as honored Captains in 2022 as McDonald earned Defensive Player of the Week plaudits two weeks ago.
The top-ranked Christopher Newport Captains will be back in action on Wednesday night as they play host to Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
