NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University junior quarterback
Matt Dzierski was named the Offensive Player of the Week Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Dzierski, from Lorton, Va., threw for three touchdowns and ran for a score in Saturday's 38-35 loss to the Apprentice School at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium.
Dzierski, the Offensive Player of the Year in the league last year, completed 15 of 23 passes for 234 yards against the Builders. He scored on a 19-yard run late in the third quarter to give the Captains their only lead of the night, 21-17.
The Captains' signal-caller connected with three different receivers on scoring plays, including two in the final 2:05 of the fourth quarter during a CNU comeback bid. Dzierski threw 24 yards to senior
Xander Jedlick for a touchdown on the final play of the first half. He then completed scoring passes to freshman
Trey Hayes from six yards out and freshman
Colin Hart from 29 yards away in the final minutes.
Dzierski this season has completed 65 percent of his pass attempts (39 of 60) through the first three weeks, and is averaging 177 yards passing per game for the Captains.
Christopher Newport, now 1-2, will host Catholic University this Saturday at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m., and the game will be a part of Family Weekend activities on campus.
