HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- The Christopher Newport women's golf team finished ninth at the NCAA Fall Preview this weekend, led by a pair of top-20 finishes on the individual leaderboard by senior
Lauren Sims and sophomore
Alex Delgado.
Under the direction of first-year head coach
Jonathan Howard, the Captains had a fine first showing against a field chock full of nationally-ranked programs. The CNU Women finished at 64-over par with a 640 (319-321) as a team, marking the finest finish for the Captains in the Championship Preview event since 2019.
Delgado and Sims tied for 19th and the former was powered by a team-best round on day two with a three-over 75. Delgado sailed over 20 spots on the individual leaderboard after overcoming a double-bogey on the first hole with an incredible round afterwards. She was at par or better in 15 of the remaining 17 with 14 pars and one birdie. She matched her career-low by signing for the 75 on Monday, and helped lead the Captains to the top-ten finish.
Sims also moved up six spots on the individual leaderboard after trimming one stroke off her first-round finish and wrapping up the 36-hole event with a 155 (78-77). The 11-over performance came with two more birdies in the second round as Sims dropped in a three on the 330-yard Par 4 sixth and a two on the 124-yard Par 3 15th hole. She finished strong, at par or better in six of the last seven holes including five straight to close.
Sophomore
Elena Rezac tied for 40th with a 16-over 160 (78-82) and notched 12 pars in the second round. She ranked second on the team and in the top-15 for the whole tournament in total pars with 22. Rookie
Katie Watson chipped in a score of 87 in her second round to help CNU score a 321 (+33) on day two. Rounding out the CNU scores was
D'yan Robinson with a 178 (83-95).
Christopher Newport will return to action in Massachusetts on September 24-25 as they travel to the Williams Championship at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown.
