NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following a dominant victory over Catholic University, two members of the Christopher Newport University football squad were honored Monday afternoon by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Junior linebacker
Michael Evans was selected the Defensive Player of the Week and senior kicker
Ryan Castle was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Captains defeated Catholic by a 38-7 margin in front of 6,148 Family Weekend fans, the third-largest crowd in program history. CNU's defense, led by Evans' ten tackles, held the Cardinals to a program record minus-48 yards rushing. Evans, from Hickory High School in Chesapeake, registered seven solo tackles as well as three assisted stops.
Castle, from Dublin, Va., connected on a 39-yard field goal and made five-of-five PAT kicks in the 31-point triumph. The senior kicker is now six-for-six on field goal attempts this year, and has made 12-of-12 extra points, for 30 points scored. Castle converted seven-of-ten tries last season and is now 13-for-16 for his career as a Captain.Â
Paul Crowley's squad is now 2-2 and will host Rowan University (2-1) Saturday at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. for the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
