Three CNU Women's Tennis Players Collect Academic All-District Recognition

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport women's tennis stars Kiersten Chang, Tessa Trate, and Raine Weis each collected College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors on Tuesday as the organization announced the 2022-23 selections in a press release at Noon. The CSC, formerly known as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced the annual Academic All-District teams on Tuesday as Christopher Newport was represented for the first time in 20 years.

The trio of CNU honorees join Ashley Alston (2002-03) as the only women's tennis players in program history to garner the prestigious award. Alston collected the certificate on the "At-Large" team before tennis was separated into their own category in 2022-23.

The CSC Academic All-District honorees will advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced May 31. To earn Academic All-District honors a player must be at least a sophomore with a 3.50 cumulative GPA while also participating in at least 50 percent of her team's matches.

On the court, all three were All-Conference selections for the Captains this season while also starring in the classroom for head coach David Weiner. The three starters guided CNU back to the team's eighth consecutive appearance in the conference championship bout where they scored a record three points against champion Mary Washington.

Chang earned second team All-Conference plaudits as a member of CNU's No. 2 doubles tandem with Mia Linam. The junior secured five wins in doubles play and has piled up 17 wins in tandem action over her first three seasons. The Fredericksburg, Va. native was selected to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference team in each of her first two seasons.

She is majoring in Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology while studying a Pre-Med track.

Trate joins her classmate among the honorees after continuing her record-breaking track at Christopher Newport in both singles and doubles. With playing partner Raine Weis, Trate advanced to the ITA Southeast Regional Championship quarterfinals and went on to enjoy a strong spring season as well. The duo was selected as fourth alternate to the Division III Doubles National Championship and wrapped up the year with 15 wins in doubles action. As a singles player, Trate played the bulk of her matches at No. 2 and led the team in total wins with 10.

Trate is majoring in Psychology.

Rounding out the 2022-23 Academic All-District picks is sophomore Raine Weis. Along with the aforementioned doubles success with Trate, Weis also continued an exceptional singles career through her second season. She has now accumulated 23 career wins while playing primarily on the top line, including nine victories in singles as a sophomore.

Weis has decided to major in Business.

Both Weis and Trate garnered first team All-Conference accolades in both singles and doubles.
