Raine Weis and Kylie Schaefer Qualify for NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Putting an emphatic punctuation mark on her illustrious career, Christopher Newport senior Raine Weis continues to add to her unprecedented career after being selected by the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships Committee to compete in both the 2025 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Weis will play with sophomore partner Kylie Schaefer in the Doubles Championship while Weis will compete in her third NCAA Singles Championship draw.

Weis has made history from the first year of her career as she became the first player in program history to qualify for both singles and doubles in the same season. Since, she accomplished the same feat in 2024 and now again in 2025. No Captain has ever qualified and/or participated in more NCAA Division III Championship events with Weis as she will be featured in her third career singles draw and her third career doubles bracket. She is the first CNU player to ever appear in the postseason event more than twice during her tenure.

Schaefer will be making her first career NCAA Doubles Championship appearance after making her inaugural NCAA Championships appearance last season as a member of the Team Tournament. She joins only Weis and Tessa Trate as Captains to qualify in pairs play at the national level.

The NCAA announced the individual championship selections on Wednesday night consisting of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on win-loss record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of the student-athlete. The team championship will take place May 20-23, while the individual championships will be May 24-27.  All action will be played at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

One of only 16 pairs to be selected to compete in the prestigious championship event, Schaefer and Weis will learn their opening round opponent not before 1:00 p.m. Eastern time on May 23. Weis will also learn her opening round opponent in the singles draw at the same time while Schaefer, who was selected as the seventh alternate for the singles draw, awaits the potential call to join the 32-player field.

The CNU tandem did not appear on the court together until dual play in 2024-25 and the duo has gone on to secure a 15-4 overall record in doubles action. All 19 matches came at No. 1 doubles as Schaefer and Weis paired up to tie Stefanie Leblang and Lindsey Pantele for the sixth most victories at No. 1 in program history.  They are just outside the top ten as a pairing at any position while Weis has continued to ascend the charts as an individual in doubles over her four year career. With 65 career wins, she ranks second all-time in doubles behind only Leblang (70), and her 50 career wins at No. 1 are the third highest ever recorded at CNU with Leblang (66) and Pantele (58) just ahead.

In singles play, Weis has also established herself as a record-setting star and tied former legend Johanna Ranta-aho for third on the single season chart with 15 wins at No. 1 this season. Over four seasons, Weis ranks tied for fifth with 55 career singles wins while recording 36 of them at No. 1, ranking third best all-time.

In the most recent Division III rankings released by the NCAA on April 27, the Captains duo ranked No. 1 in Region IV while Weis was ranked No. 2 in singles. In the ITA national rankings, Weis is ranked No. 15 in the singles rankings while she and her partner check in at No. 11 nationally.

Full draws for the championships will be released on May 23 and more information will be available on CNUsports.com as it is made available.
