Conference Champion CNU Men's Tennis Earns All-Conference Honors; Captains Take Four of Five Major Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following a thrilling conference championship victory by the 21st-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team, the All-Conference honors have been announced by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference and CNU secured four major awards and six overall certificates. For the first time in program history, CNU earned Conference Doubles Team of the Year as Ashton Legum and Vincent Truong earned the recognition while Gabe Smith is the third CNU player to earn Rookie of the Year honors in the last six seasons for the Captains.

In addition, fifth-year senior Edvard Porsmyr Hansen hauled in the Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for the Captains while Eric Christiansen, along with assistant coach Dan McCain, were named the Coaching Staff of the Year in the conference. Six CNU players received All-Conference honors in singles, headlined by first team recognition for Truong and Nesh Kumaresan, while one doubles tandem, Truong and Legum, was named first team All-Conference in doubles play. Ryan Monroe, Legum, Smith, and Porsmyr Hansen each earned second team All-C2C recognition in singles.

The C2C Doubles Team of the Year played together in 17 matches during the season and boast a 10-7 overall record together this year. Legum and Truong were 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, including a pivotal win against Mary Washington in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship. One day prior, the CNU tandem also earned a huge win against regionally-ranked Jhayden Pappas and Asher Willenborg from Salisbury University to help the Captains advance to the finals. The duo also had a 6-3 win against the fourth-ranked pairing in the Atlantic South when they downed Johns Hopkins' top pairing on April 19.

It marks the second career All-Conference recognition in doubles for both Truong and Legum.

After a dominant first season for the Captains, Gabe Smith hauls in the C2C Rookie of the Year selection to join a list of six previous CNU players to earn the recognition. He joins David Reed (2015), Ryan Macy (2019), and Vincent Truong (2023) as the only Captains to earn Rookie of the Year honors since joining the league in 2013-14. Playing in both singles and doubles during his first year, Smith made an immediate impact on the CNU lineup. He paired with Porsmyr Hansen for a 14-5 record in doubles, winning seven matches at both No. 2 and No. 3. In tournament play, he also had a 5-2 record with Rainer Christiansen, leading Smith to a team-high 19 doubles wins in his first year, tying for the eighth most in a single season. While playing as an individual, Smith recorded 13 wins across three different starting positions.

Smith was recognized as a second team All-Conference selection for his performance in 2024-25.

Edvard Porsmyr Hansen piled up 18 wins in singles play to earn second team All-Conference honors but paired his exceptional on-court prowess with another standout year in the classroom to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition. He was named a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District pick twice and will become the first three-time selection alongside Legum when the organization announces the award officially next week. On the court, he closes his career ranked sixth all-time in career singles wins with 62. He earned his undergraduate degree in Finance and is working toward a Masters in Financial Analysis.

Rounding out the major awards is the 2025 C2C Coaching Staff of the Year led by Director of Tennis Eric Christiansen. It marks the second time in his career that Christiansen has been named the top helmsman in the league after guiding the Captains to a banner season in 2025. The Captains clinched the conference crown and closed the year with a 13-8 overall record. CNU played 13 opponents in the national rankings including eight teams in the top-25. CNU earned wins against six ranked opponents including back-to-back victories in the conference tournament to hoist the ssecond conference championship trophy since joining the league in 2013-14.

Along the way, Christiansen recorded his 150th career win at the helm of the CNU Men's Tennis program and has piled up 154 total wins in 13 seasons. Statistically, the Captains won over 61 percent of doubles matches this year in dual play while capturing over 58 percent of singles wins.

First Team All-Conference honors were distributed to both Vincent Truong and Nesh Kumaresan in singles play. Truong played entirely at No. 1 this season and recorded seven wins including a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win against Mary Washington's regionally-ranked Trevor Rein in the C2C finals. He had an impressive win against Diego Segovia, ranked No. 26 in the nation, when CNU took on 24th-ranked N.C. Wesleyan. Kumaresan overcame an injury to appear in 13 matches for the Captains this season. The sophomore played primarily at No. 2, where he earned the All-C2C certificate with two key victories in back-to-back matches against Salisbury highlighting his season.

The second team All-C2C picks included Ryan Monroe at No. 3. The junior ranked second on the team in singles wins with 15 including 10 wins across the top three positions in dual play. Legum, the C2C Championship MVP, notched 14 wins during the season with at least one win at five different positions. And Porsmyr Hansen led the squad with 18 total wins including an impressive 10-2 mark between No. 2, 3, and 4.

Christopher Newport is ranked No. 8 in the region and has moved up to No. 17 in the Division III national rankings according to the ITA. The 13 wins are the second most in a season for CNU since 2017.
