NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The most decorated women's tennis player in the near 50-year history of Christopher Newport women's tennis continued to add to her impressive ledger on Friday morning when senior
Raine Weis hauled in three more major conference awards to headline the Coast-To-Coast Athletic All-Conference Honors. Weis repeats as the C2C Player of the Year as well as half of the C2C Doubles Team of the Year with playing partner
Kylie Schaefer. Weis was also tabbed the Scholar-Athlete of the Year while head coach
David Weiner, along with assistants
Megan Bauer and
Tessa Trate, repeats as the C2C Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
In addition to the impressive award-winning performances, the Captains also collected a bevy of All-Conference certificates. Weis, Schaefer, and rookie
Kendal Chang earned first team All-Conference honors in singles while
Samantha Robertson and
Lindsey Bergelin were named second team selections. In doubles play, Weis and Schaefer earned first team honors while CNU boasted two of the three second team tandems -- Chang and Robertson, and Bergelin with
Erin Gross.
Weis is the first CNU player to be named the Conference Player of the Year three times in her career and is also the first player to earn Doubles Team of the Year more than once in her career. She joins an exclusive list of just three players in conference history to earn Player of the Year recognition three or more times in her career, joining Mary Washington's Lindsay Raulston (2012-14) and Lea Schon (1998-2001).
This season, the senior from Ashland, Va. has been nationally-ranked in both discliplines for the duration of the year. She was selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles National Championships and will enter the postseason ranked No. 15 in singles and No. 11 in doubles. She is 18-4 during individual play including a 15-2 record at No. 1 in duals, while she has piled up 17 doubles victory including a 15-4 record at No. 1 doubles. She has continued to etch her name amid the program's elite with top-five win totals in wins at No. 1 in singles and doubles while also climbing the career charts as well.
Equally as impressive in the classroom, Weis gives CNU back-to-back Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year selections. She is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection and will earn her third certificate from the organization next week. A two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, Weis is majoring in Accounting.
Her playing partner,
Kylie Schaefer, stepped into play with Weis after a three-year partnership with
Tessa Trate closed following the latter's graduation last year. Fitting in perfectly with Weis, the sophomore star helped the Captains' top tandem win 15 matches and secure the highest national ranking for a duo in program history. Schaefer and Weis checked in at No. 7 in the ITA national rankings this spring, setting a new program mark. Also earning first team All-Conference honors in singles, Schaefer tied for second on the team with 15 wins in singles play including 11 wins at No. 2. She will serve as an alternate at the NCAA Singles Championship while she is set to appear in her first Doubles Championship Draw with Weis.
Rounding out the major award winners is the Captains' coaching staff, selected as the top group in the league for the second straight year.
David Weiner was named the Coach of the Year for the second straight season after guiding the Captains to back-to-back conference champions. Trate and Bauer round out the staff that helped lead CNU to a 13-7 overall record. CNU earned the highest national ranking in program history this year when they checked in at No. 14 in the ITA rankings on March 26.
In singles play,
Kendal Chang gave the Captains half of the first team All-Conference picks to lead the way in the conference. The freshman was the only rookie to earn first team All-C2C recognition in singles and she added a second team All-C2C certificate in doubles. This year, Chang tied for second on the team with 15 wins in singles while adding 12 wins in pairs play. She played primarily at No. 3, piecing together a 10-4 record at that position including seven straight wins to end the season.
Robertson and Bergelin added second team All-C2C selections in singles play. Robertson, a sophomore, went 13-9 in singles with 12 wins in dual action. She carries the longest win streak into next year as she finished the year strong with nine straight victories. Bergelin, another freshman, finished her first year with seven wins overall and four in dual action.
The All-Conference honorees included two second team doubles pairings for CNU as well. Robertson and Chang were 10-5 at No. 2 in doubles while Bergelin and
Erin Gross paired up for a 4-1 record at No. 3. They helped CNU record a 65.5 percent winning percentage in doubles play during head-to-head play in 2024-25. Gross also added four wins with
Eva Taylor to finish her season with nine total doubles wins.
Christopher Newport is currently ranked No. 31 in the nation while holding at No. 6 in the Atlantic South region. The Captains won their second straight conference title and finished out the year with a 13-7 overall record.
