NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the third time in her career, Christopher Newport junior
Kylie Schaefer has been named the top player in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the week as she collected the first C2C Womn's Tennis Player of the Week recognition on Monday. Schaefer helped lead the nationally-ranked Captains (2-0) to a strong start with 7-0 wins against RIT and Averett this week.
The veteran starter picked up a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles with playing partner
Lindsey Bergelin. First, the duo squared off against RIT's Emily Greb and Kira Kronenberg for a 6-2 win. Then, picking up Schaefer's 30th career doubles victory, the top Captains' tandem disposed of Averett's Elisa Battermann and Dilara Sultanova quickly, 6-1. Sixteen of those 30 career wins have come on the top line as she stalks the all-time list at Christopher Newport, just nine shy of joining the top ten.
In addition to the strong start in doubles, Schaefer played one match at No. 1 and one at No. 2 in singles play. She started with Greb (RIT) on Friday, capturing a 6-3, 6-2 win, before sliding down to No. 2 against Harshri Asher (AU) on Sunday, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Schaefer was at the top of a dominant team performance for the Captains as CNU won all 18 matchups in the two dual appearances this weekend.
Kendal Chang was also 1-0 at No. 1 and 1-0 at No. 2 singles while pairing up with
Samantha Robertson for a 2-0 effort at No. 2.
Erin Gross secured a pair of doubles wins at No. 3 while also capturing wins at No. 5 and 6 during individual play. Robertson also swept her week with wins at No. 3 and 4 for the Captains.
After it all, CNU cruised to a pair of 7-0 wins against RIT and Averett and start the season with a 2-0 record. The Captains will return to action in Lexington, Va. this weekend for the Washington and Lee Invite on February 21-22. CNU will take on Swarthmore College, ranked No. 22 in the nation, on Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m. before facing the host and 19th-ranked Generals on Sunday at Noon.
