HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior Jacob Foti matched the program scoring record on a Par 72 course with a six-under 66 and helped the Captains men's golf program shatter the record-book for a 36-hole tournament with a second-place finish at the Kinder-Williams Invitational. For the first time in program history, the Captains finished a 36-hole tournament under par and obliterated the previous record in relation to par by 11 strokes. 

As a team, the Captains signed for an 11-under par 565 to break the low tournament total score by three strokes, besting a 568 in the 2022 O'Briant-Jensen Memorial. In relation to par, the previous mark was an Even par score at the same tournament, marking Tuesday's final score of 11-under as the best two-round tournament performance in program history by a wide margin. 

It is also the best tournament performance of any round length by seven strokes, unseating the four-under Jekyll Island Invitational performance from 2022. CNU matched the team scoring record on a par 72 and also tied the team's low single round (-7) scoring performance in relation to par. Previously, CNU fired a seven-under score at the 2007 Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate and the 2023 Jekyll Island Invitational. 

The historic performance featured two rounds under par and two Even par 72's on the second day as Foti's six-under was the finest round fired over two days of action at the Lakeview GC. It powered him into second place as an individual with a 138 (72-66) and into the record books at CNU with the fifth-best 36-hole tournament in program history. The record, set at 11-under in the 2016 VSGA, was set by David Rabil who is poised to be inducted into the CNU Athletics Hall of Fame this October. The 66 ties the program scoring record set by Chris Olson in 2009 and matched by Rabil in 2016 and is just one stroke behind the single-round program low in relation to par (-7) set by Rabil in at the Golfweek Invitational. 

Foti, an Arlington, Va. native, shaved one stroke off his career-low scoring record on Tuesday when he finished the round with five birdies and an eagle. He added 11 pars and just one bogey in the round and finished with a flourish, scoring four-under par on the final five holes. He raced up the leaderboard and finished just one stroke behind medalist Jayden Hendricks from Bridgewater College. 

In addition to the record-breaking performance by Foti, CNU also got a one-under 71 from Patrick O'Rourke on day two. He balanced back-to-back bogeys to start with three straight birdies to right the ship. After making the turn at Even par, O'Rourke closed strong with two more birdies on the final two holes of the afternoon. He tied for fourth with a 142 (71-71) and finished the 36-hole tournament with nine birdies. 

Jimmy Spallone, the day one leader, finished third overall with a four-under 140 (68-72). After firing a career-low 68 on the first day, Spallone backed it up with another impressive Even par round on day two. He recorded three more birdies and 12 pars on Tuesday. 

Rounding out the counting scores on day two was Fischer Leggitt, who wrapped up an Even par 72 to match Spallone's second round effort. He also had four birdies and closed out the tournament with a 145 (73-72) to finish tied for 13th. J.P. Carr (+9) was tied for 55th on the leaderboard and added a 153 (77-76) for the Captains starting lineup. 

CNU was locked in a battle with Bridgewater for the team championship and ultimately settled for runner-up by two strokes. The host Eagles were 13-under for the win with a 563 while CNU finished at 11-under with a 565. The third place team, Roanoke, was 15 strokes behind as the Captains pulled away from the field. 

The Captains will next play at home when they host the Fall NCAA Preview on September 20-21. The tournament will be played at Kingsmill Resort, the host of the 2027 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
