CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Competing in the Jefferson Cup regatta hosted by the University of Virginia, the Christopher Newport sailing team captured a fourth-place finish out of eight teams in the event. The Captains raced to an 82-point effort and were just six points shy of second place Hampton University. 

Virginia Tech pulled away for the team victory but the next five finishers were separated by just 22 total points. The competitive regatta saw Christopher Newport finish third in A division with 37 points and fourth in B division with 45 points. 

The Captains A division boat started with Berend Van der Meer steering with Hannah Louise Roethel as crew for the first rotation. Then, for the remaining eight races, Griffin Donahoe took the helm while Van der Meer filled in as crew. The CNU boat finished out of the top five only twice in ten completed races and had one bullet, winning the eighth race of the weekend on Sunday. 

In B division sailing, the Captains overcame one capsized score, taking a nine in the third race, before rallying to put together six straight top-five finishes. The best came in the sixth race of B division when Christopher Newport crossed the line second. Sailing in the B division boat was Charles Willmarth alongside Jacob Fleming for two and Louise Roethel for the other eight. 

The Sailing team will return to action this weekend at the College of Charleston Fall Interconference on October 3-4.
