WATERFORD, Conn. -- Facing a field jam-packed with nationally-ranked competition, the Christopher Newport cross country teams fared well as the men placed 19th overall, and the women came in 20th during the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday at Harkness Memorial State Park.
On the men's side, the Captains faced eight squads listed in the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll while compiling a team score of 522. Meanwhile, the women squared off against nine nationally-ranked programs, including three in the top-10. Eventually, the Captains posted a score of 501.
On an individual level,
Jason Putnam came through with Christopher Newport's top finish after placing 35th in the men's 8k. The senior recorded a time of 25:26.0, which marked a season-best. Meanwhile, several other Captains established new PRs on Saturday.
Nick Tolarchyk cut five seconds off his best with a time of 26:45.0, while
Cooper Albright shaved 17 ticks off his top mark after cruising to a time of 27:53.4.
Joining Putnam at the front of the pack,
Ryan Henderson finished second on the team in 26:31.8, while
Sam Koltisko led the first-year competitors in 26:39.4. Rounding out the men's side,
Eric Speeney clocked in at 26:42.0, and
William Ward notched his fastest time of the year with a 27:48.0 mark.
For the women,
Jessica Lee and
Samantha Dickerson finished in the top-100 during the 6k. Lee tallied a 23:01.4 clocking, which placed her 66th overall. Dickerson followed in 86th after completing the course in 23:13.9. Two other Captains also threw down sub-24-minute marks as
Logan Funk nearly matched her PR in 23:42.2, and
Monica Lannen raced to a time of 23:46.7.
Rounding out the squad's top-seven,
Kaitlyn Ardrey came in at 24:21.4,
Mae Savoie finished in 24:38.8, and
Kellie Hyde crossed the line in 24:48.4.
Christopher Newport will now begin its final preparations for the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held in York, Pennsylvania on November 2.
