FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Clark Edwards and
Logan Funk swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week Awards after the two stars made history for Christopher Newport at the Paul Short Run on Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The weekly award is the third of the season for Funk after she was previously celebrated on September 6 and September 20. In her career, she has now been named the Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week four times. Meanwhile, Edwards was honored for the second time this year after earning the men's award on September 6 as well.
During the Paul Short Run, Funk pieced together one of the finest efforts in school history during the Brown 6k. Competing against some of the top runners in the nation, she finished the race in 22:10.3. That marked the second-fastest clocking in program history, falling just short of Logan Harrington's program-record time of 22:04.6 set in 2014. It also shaved 80 seconds off Funk's previous PR of 23:30.6, which she established during the 2019 NCAA South / Southeast Regionals.
Overall, Funk placed 37th in Friday's race, which included eight nationally-ranked Division III programs and runners from 22 Division I teams.
On the men's side, Edwards also climbed the all-time charts with his showcase in the Brown 8k. During the competition, he threw down a time of 25:33.2, which marked the 18th-fastest clocking in program history and the finest mark since 2017. It also obliterated his previous PR of 26:54.9, which he set during the 2018 NCAA South / Southeast Regionals.
With his performance on Friday, Edwards came in 33rd in the race while helping the Captains place eighth in the final team standings. Overall, Christopher Newport defeated 15 Division I programs as well as a pair of nationally-ranked Division III squads.
Edwards, Funk, and the rest of their teammates will return to action on October 16 when Christopher Newport travels to Logan Township, New Jersey for the Inter-Regional Border Battle at the Gloucester Dream Park.
