SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams will take part in the NCAA South Regional Championships on Saturday at the Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The men will compete for regional glory in the 8k beginning at 11 a.m. The women will head out for the 6k at 12:15 p.m.

The winning team of each race on Saturday will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will take place on November 20 at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Meanwhile, 22 other squads from around the country will be picked as at-large participants in the title competition. The final selections will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday.
Entering the meet, Christopher Newport is ranked fourth in the region in both the men's and women's races. The Captains slot just behind Emory, Lynchburg, and Washington & Lee, who hold down the top-three spots in both polls.
Christopher Newport is coming off a strong showing at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships in which both the men and women placed second in the final team standings. On an individual level,
Logan Funk won the women's 6k with a school-record time of 21:44. Meanwhile,
Kaitlyn Ardrey also topped the previous program record after placing second in the race with a 21:57.3 clocking.
Overall, Funk and Ardrey were joined on the All-Conference squad by
Madi Rawlings,
Mae Savoie, and
Maggie Ralston.
In the men's race,
Ryan Henderson threw down the seventh-fastest 8k mark in school history after placing second overall with a time of 25:02.7.
Clark Edwards and
Eric Speeney also hauled in first-team All-Conference accolades after finishing in the top-eight during the race, while
Daniel Ferrante and
Nick Tolarchyk picked up second-team All-League nods.
Christopher Newport last competed in the NCAA Regional Championships in 2019 when the women placed fifth in the race, while the men came in eighth. Speeney is the top returner from that competition after placing 44th in the 8k, while
Sam Koltisko came in 48th. Funk is the leading veteran on the women's side after finishing 49th in 2019.
The men have won three regional titles in program history after walking away with crowns in 1994, 2016, and 2017. Meanwhile, the women have placed second twice after finishing as the runner-up in 2003 and 2014.
