Captains Win Seven Events as Track & Field Kicks Off Indoor Campaign at CNU Holiday Open

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Kicking off the indoor season in style, the Christopher Newport track & field teams compiled seven victories during a solid all-around effort at the Holiday Open on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

"We ended up with a dozen PRs and several near misses with only about a third of the team competing," said head coach Tyler Wingard. "There were good efforts across the board, and it is great to see so many people ahead or near where they left off last winter."

Headlining the action, Katie Stevens picked up right where she wrapped up last year in the throwing events. The reigning Virginia State Rookie Field Athlete of the Year posted a pair of victories during the competition. In the weight throw, she unloaded a 14.08-meter toss, which established a new PR and moved her to third on the program's all-time performance list. Later, she punctuated the season opener by winning the shot put with a 10.91-meter heave.

In other field events, Tyler Palmer won the men's shot put with a distance of 13.81 meters, and Avery Mangels kicked off her career with a memorable showcase. The first-year star eclipsed 2.82 meters in the pole vault, which earned her a victory in her collegiate debut.

Meanwhile, on the track, the women's team stockpiled three wins. Alyssa Roach took the 60-hurdles in 9.15, Casey Yenyo captured the 800 in 2:31.83, and Madi Rawlings cruised to a victory in the 3000 after crossing the line in 11:05.32. Roach also matched the meet's top clearance in the high jump after topping the bar at 1.48 meters.

Along with Mangels, several other Captains also looked sharp in their first collegiate action. Annabelle Dreher finished second in the the shot put (10.42 meters) and third in the weight throw (10.16 meters). Ben Nitzsche also starred on the men's side. The freshman speedster led the Captains with a time of 9.07 in the prelims of the 60-hurdles before placing seventh overall in the finals of the event. He also ran the lead leg on the squad's 4x400-relay, which came in fourth with a time of 3:48.27. Jack Armel, Ethan Bower, and Logan Bishop rounded out the foursome.

Among the veterans, CJ Reeders was second in the triple jump (13.57 meters), and Daniel Fox was the runner-up in the 200 (22.97). He also threw down a time of 7.02 in the prelims of the 60. Meanwhile, in the throws, Dante Ntiganzwa added a pair of top-five efforts after coming in third in the weight throw (14.08 meters) and fifth in the shot put (12.49 meters). Freshman Daniel Young was also fourth in the shot (12.97 meters), while returning standouts Latrell Fomby (13.38 meters) and Colin Sliwa (12.73 meters) added top-five marks in the weight throw as well.

On the women's side, Grace Damewood was fourth in the long jump (4.90 meters), Sydney Trussell was fifth in the 60 (7.95), and Lauren Randolph capped off a solid day by the freshman throwers with a fifth-place showing in the shot (9.82 meters).

Christopher Newport will return to action on January 13 for the start of the Keydet Invitational in Lexington, Virginia.
