Christopher Newport Sweeps Team Titles at Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships; John Vogel Named Men's Track Athlete of the Meet

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport track & field program swept the team titles during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships as the Captains won 13 individual crowns and set two meet records during a stellar performance at the Freeman Center.

Headlining the competition, John Vogel was celebrated as the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 5000 on Friday before finishing second in the 3000 on Saturday. His 8:40.24 clocking in the 3000 also placed him sixth on the school's all-time performance list.

Aided by Vogel's showcase, the men eventually accumulated 200 points, which out-distanced runner-up Salisbury by 89. Meanwhile, the women also claimed the title after finishing with 184 points. UC Santa Cruz came in second with 126.

"We definitely picked up where we left off last night," said head coach Tyler Wingard, whose squad came through with 28 more PRs during Saturday's action. "As coaches, we always worry about how the team will perform when coming in as heavy favorites, so it was great to see the high-level energy and focus that made the most of the weekend."

During the competition, both Allan Pedin and Logan Funk established new championship meet records. Leading the way, Funk lit up the track in the 3000. Facing stiff competition, she edged out the field with a time of 10:26.82. That shaved over six seconds off the previous meet record of 10:33.04, which was set by Mary Washington's Jillian Weisbeck in 2018. It also marked the second-fastest clocking in school history, trailing only Megan Fogarty's record-setting run of 10:08.92 in 2006.

Meanwhile, in the men's pole vault, Pedin topped 4.45 meters, which broke the championship standard of 4.44 meters set by Salisbury's Zach Stump in 2019. It also marked the seventh-highest clearance in program lore.

Making a little history of their own on Saturday, Tyler Palmer and Abigail Honeycutt swept the shot put crowns. Palmer won the men's discipline with a 14.24-meter heave, while Honeycutt snatched the women's title after uncorking an 11.79-meter toss. Both of those efforts rank eighth in school history.

Equally effective on the track, Alyssa Roach claimed the 60-hurdles in 9.24 after winning the long jump crown on Friday. Additionally, Casey Yenyo captured the women's 400 (1:04.68), while Brandon Berry won the men's 200 in 22.93. Later, Berry came back to anchor the victorious 4x400-relay after teaming up with Perry Spring, Brenton Duvall, and Cooper Albright on a 3:30.21 clocking.

Rounding out the champions on Saturday, Clark Edwards took the men's 800 with a time of 1:56.99. Moments later, Daniel Ferrante came in second in the event after clocking in at 1:57.64.

Christopher Newport was especially effective at stockpiling points in the field events. In addition to the victors, the Captains received several incredible efforts. Katie Stevens finished second in the women's shot put (11.35 meters), while Mazie Clark was third (10.99). Meanwhile, Amir Siders moved to ninth on the program's all-time performance list in the men's shot put after finishing second at the meet with a 14.20-meter launch. Jack Armel also was the runner-up in the pole vault after topping 4.35 meters.

Among other top-scoring efforts on the men's side, Nathanael Ferrante was second in the mile (4:25.78), while Daniel Ferrante was just a split second behind in third-place (4:25.81). CJ Reeders was also the runner-up in the triple jump (14.00 meters), Daniel Fox was third in the 60 (7.09), Berry was third in the 400 (51.93), and Armel was third in the 60-hurdles (8.91). Latrell Fomby also paced the squad with a fourth-place showing in the high jump after topping 1.75 meters.

On the women's side, Lindsey Stirling was the runner-up in the 60 (8.26), Roach was second in the 200 (27.41), and Mae Savoie matched that finish in the 800 (2:56.20). Additionally, Funk came in third in the mile (5:25.69), and Hannah Gentrup, Sarah Anstice, Ainsley Miller, and Casey Yenyo placed third in the 4x400-relay (4:28.37). Grace Damewood also added the team's top mark in the triple jump after landing a distance of 9.76 meters, which placed her sixth in the conference.

Christopher Newport will now focus on qualifying for the NCAA Championships, which will take place next month. The Captains will return to action on February 26 for the start of the CNU Qualifier & Combined Events at the Freeman Center.
