HARRISONBURG, Va. -- John Vogel was named the Virginia State Men's Track Rookie of the Year, while
Logan Funk and
Alyssa Roach joined him on the first-team All-State squad as Christopher Newport was well-represented on the VaSID Indoor Track & Field Teams, which were announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Friday afternoon.
Vogel was named the top newcomer on the men's side while also hauling in individual plaudits for his work in distance events. Funk also garnered first-team honors for her standout season in the women's distance events, while Roach was celebrated for her performance in the pentathlon and was a second-team selection in jumps. Additionally, she was joined on the second-team All-State squad by nine other individual honorees and a relay team.
Also garnering All-State accolades,
Peyton Blanding,
CJ Reeders,
Allan Pedin, and
Jack Armel received a citation for their work in the jumps and vertical events, while
Mazie Clark,
Katie Stevens, and
Tyler Palmer were acknowledged for excelling in the throws. Meanwhile,
Clark Edwards was honored in the mid-distance disciplines, and
Kaitlyn Ardrey earned second-team recognition for her performance in distance events as well as a member of the Distance Medley Relay.
Along with Ardrey,
Mae Savoie,
Callie Pratt, and
Casey Yenyo rounded out the award-winning foursome on the DMR.
Headlining the honorees, Vogel pieced together a terrific debut campaign in the winter. The first-year phenom won the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship in the 5,000 while also placing second in the 3,000. For his work during the league competition, he was honored as the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet.
In addition to his All-Conference awards, Vogel hauled in All-Region nods in the 3,000 after ranking fourth in the South with a time of 8:35.09. That also placed him fourth on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list.
On the women's side, Roach collected a pair of All-State awards after continuing to shine in a variety of disciplines during the indoor campaign. In the pentathlon, she qualified for the NCAA Championships and eventually placed 12th in the country while setting a PR with a score of 3,188. That marked the fifth-best effort in program history.
Meanwhile, Roach also won league championships in both the long jump and 60-hurdles while placing second in the conference in the 200. For her work during the winter, she was celebrated as the USTFCCCA South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
Rounding out the first-team honorees, Funk was a force in the distance events. The senior star captured the league championship in the 3,000. Later, she established a new PR in the event after capping off the season with a time of 10:12.02 during the South Region Final Qualifier. That marked the top clocking in the region and the second-fastest in school history.
Ardrey was also dominant in the 3,000 throughout the indoor season. She ranked second in the region with a 10:14.62 clocking. That also bumped her to third on the program's all-time performance list. Meanwhile, she also nabbed All-Region honors in the DMR after teaming up with Savoie, Pratt, and Yenyo for a time of 12:49.61 at the league championships. That earned the foursome All-Conference honors and placed them third in the South Region.
On the men's side, Edwards earned the All-State award in the mid-distance category after winning the conference championship in the 800 with a time of 1:56.99 at the title meet.
Christopher Newport also stockpiled awards after the Captains shined in the pole vault throughout the winter. Blanding and Pedin swept the league championships and earned All-Region accolades for their work. Blanding eventually posted a season-best clearance of 3.35 meters, which moved her to fourth in program history. For the men, Pedin topped 4.45 meters, which vaulted him to seventh in school history.
In addition to the league champions, Armel also earned All-State recognition for his work in the pole vault. He hauled in All-Conference and All-Region nods in the event after topping 4.40 meters at the Holiday Open in December.
Reeders was also celebrated by the state after hauling in second-team All-Conference laurels in both the long jump and triple jump. His season-best distance of 14.02 meters in the triple jump also earned him All-Region plaudits after placing him third on the South leaderboard in 2022.
Three throwers also secured second-team All-State awards. On the men's side, Palmer won the conference championship in the shot put and ranked fourth in the region with a 14.24-meter heave. Meanwhile, for the women, Clark captured the weight throw crown after unloading a 13.51-meter toss, and Stevens earned All-Conference citations in a pair of events. The freshman sensation placed second in the league and ranked in the top-10 in the region in both the weight throw and shot put.
Aided by the efforts of the All-State honorees, Christopher Newport closed out the winter by sweeping the team titles at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
