INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Continuing to make history for the Christopher Newport women's tennis team, freshman
Raine Weis was selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Division III Singles National Championship from May 27-29. Weis will become the first player in women's tennis history and only the second ever CNU Captain to compete in both the singles and doubles championships.
Weis will join CNU Athletics Hall of Famer John Mook, who competed in the 2008 Singles and Doubles Championships and became the first player to earn All-American honors in both. The CNU rookie was already set to make history with partner
Tessa Trate as the first doubles tandem in CNU Women's Tennis history to appear at the national championship event and Weis will now also compete in singles.
The CNU freshman was the first alternate when the selections were first announced on May 11. Thanks to a withdrawal, Weis was inserted into the championship field of 32 and will compete in the first round at the USTA Collegiate Center in Orlando, Fla. on May 27. Draws for the event will be announced on the evening of Wednesday, May 25.
After her first year, Weis became only the second player in program lore to garner Conference Athlete of the Year recognition. She was also named the league's Rookie of the Year and was a first team All-Conference pick in both singles and doubles.
Weis posted the most wins by a first-year player since 2016-17 when
Johanna Ranta-aho set a freshman record with 21 wins. This spring, Weis earned a win over No. 11 Gabi Moss (W&L) and added a marquee win against Mary Washington's Abby Moghtader, who was ranked No. 3 in the region. Weis is ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic South heading into the postseason event.
