GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Highlighted by several impressive individual performances on the first day, the ninth-ranked Christopher Newport men's golf program opened the 2022-23 season with a strong showing at the Gate City Invitational first and second rounds on Monday. Sophomore
Owen Cook fired an opening round 69 for a career-best showing and senior
Alex Price matched his two-under card in the second round.
The Captains sit in fifth place after the first 36 holes of action with three players in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard. In addition to Price sitting in a tie for seventh with a one-under 141 (72-69), fellow senior
Robb Kinder notched back-to-back 72's for a two-over 144 and also appears in the top-20. Cook slipped slightly in the second round, but with a four-over 146 (69-77), is very much still in contention after being tied for 24th through the first day of action.
Not far behind, rookie
Austin Smith (+5) looks unfazed by the higher level of competition in his first career event with strong showings in both rounds. Smith was three-over with a 74 in the opening round and shaved a stroke off that performance with a two-over 73 in the second round of the day.
As a team, the Captains were dominant on the long holes, ranking second in the tournament for Par 5 scoring. CNU has recorded 29 birdies and 108 pars through the first 36 holes and sits just 11 strokes off the pace set by Methodist (-1) through the first two rounds.
