NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Showcasing a dominant performance in the classroom this year, all eight rostered women's tennis players for Christopher Newport University were honored as Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). As a result, the Captains were also among 175 Division III Women's Tennis programs to collect the All-Academic Team distinction.
Impressively, the eight Christopher Newport women's tennis players combined for a cumulative GPA over 3.80 in the spring semester. To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team GPA of 3.2 or better. Individuals earning ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition must have a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year.
The honored Captains were
Ana Clara Borga,
Lucy Davis, Regan Delp,
Kara Ferner,
Johanna Ranta-aho,
Olivia Reed,
Kendra Womack, and
Amanda Yermal. The eight student-athletes recognized by the ITA matches the record number set a year ago. Four of the Captains returners were repeat selections including Ferner, who was named a Goldwater Scholar this winter. The junior became the second Christopher Newport University student and coincidentally the second CNU women's tennis player to earn the prestigious honor.
In total, 1,058 Division III women's tennis players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes around the nation. The ITA announced the honors Thursday morning to recognize collegiate tennis players adding to the rich intellectual community found on college campuses.
The ITA is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at NCAA Division I, II and II, NAIA and Junior/Community College. The ITA administers a comprehensive awards and rankings program for men's and women's varsity players, coaches and teams in all divisions, providing recognition for their accomplishments on and off the court.
