NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will kick off the 2022-23 indoor campaign on Saturday when the Captains host the annual Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
Action gets underway with the men's weight throw at 9 a.m. Two hours later, the women's 5,000 will open the track disciplines. Overall, 32 total events will take place during the all-day competition.
For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Overall, nearly a dozen universities will have representatives at Saturday's meet, including Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rivals Mary Washington, St. Mary's (Md.), and Salisbury. Currently, 31 Captains are slated to take part in at least one event during the competition with 19 men and 12 women scheduled to appear over the weekend.
Among those standouts currently entered in an event, three reigning indoor conference champions will make their season debuts on Saturday. On the women's side,
Alyssa Roach was named the 2022 South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and went on to place 12th in the pentathlon at the NCAA Championships. Prior to her work at the national meet, she won the 60-hurdles and long jump during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
In addition to Roach,
Casey Yenyo won the women's indoor 400 title last year, while
Perry Spring was a member of the men's victorious 4x400-relay.
Roach is also one of several Captains scheduled to take part in three events on Saturday. On the women's side, Roach,
Avery Mangels,
Ainsley Miller, and
Sydney Trussell have busy weekends in store. Mangels, Miller, and Trussell are all slotted in the 200 and 4x400-relay, while Trussell is also set to compete in the 60 and the other two are entered in the pole vault. Meanwhile,
CJ Reeders has a full slate on the men's side as the 2021 All-American is currently set to compete in the long jump, triple jump, and 60-meter dash.
Saturday's competition will serve as Christopher Newport's only meet in December. The Captains will return on January 13 for the start of the VMI Keydet Invitational in Lexington, Virginia.
