Day 1 Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Starring in the hammer throw, the Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up the first day of the New Captains Classic with a pair of historic efforts on Friday evening at TowneBank Stadium.
Leading the way, Katie Evans won the women's hammer with a 42.52-meter launch, which moved her to seventh on the program's all-time performance list. Meanwhile,
Mazie Clark finished second overall with a 38.23-meter effort.
On the men's side,
Joe Kilama was the runner-up in the hammer with a 47.06-meter toss, which just fell short of his PR. However,
Amir Siders eclipsed his personal-best with a 46.67-meter effort. That vaulted him to seventh on the school's all-time list.
In other throwing events,
Latrell Fomby came in fourth in the men's javelin after collecting a 33.53-meter distance.
While the throwers headlined the first day of the meet,
Alyssa Roach and
Jack Armel kicked off the combined events with some impressive efforts. Roach wrapped up the day in first-place in the heptathlon with 2,517 points. The junior star won the 200 (27.10) and 100-hurdles (14.91)Â while also adding a 1.44-meter clearance in the high jump and an 8.07-meter toss in the shot put.
On the men's side, Armel wrapped up the first five events of the decathlon in second-place with 2,696 points. During the competition, he claimed a pair of wins after notching the top marks in the 100 (12.15) and long jump (5.85 meters). Rounding out the first day, he completed the 400 in 55.30, topped 1.68 meters in the high jump, and landed an 8.65-meter effort in the shot put.
"The weather decided to get funky on us and caused a delayed start," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "Shifting winds and dropping temperatures didn't make for great decathlon or heptathlon weather, but Alyssa and Jack put in some good work on day one. The throwers were unaffected, however, as we got five PRs in the hammer plus two more in the javelin and another in the heptathlon shot put."
"Hopefully the weather is a little more consistent tomorrow, and we can finish off the meet with a lot of great performances across the board," added Wingard.
Saturday's action gets underway with track and field disciplines beginning at 11 a.m.
