NEW ORLEANS -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams stockpiled All-South Region honors as 12 Captains picked up at least one award from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday afternoon.
Overall, the Captains earned 17 total awards with
John Vogel headlining the decorated contingent. The first-year sensation secured All-Region plaudits in three separate distance events. He ranked fourth in the South in the 3000-steeplechase and fifth in both the 1500 and 5000.
Along with Vogel, three other standouts earned multiple honors.
Kaitlyn Ardrey posted the region's top clocking in the 10,000 after establishing a new school record with a 36:40.52 mark at the Colonial Relays. The fourth-year phenom also ranked fourth in the 5000. Meanwhile,
Alyssa Roach was first in the region in the heptathlon and third in the 100-hurdles. She eventually capped off her junior campaign with a 16th-place showing in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships.
Rounding out the multiple award-winners,
Jack Armel slotted second in the region in the decathlon and fourth in the pole vault.
Equally impressive in the pole vault,
Peyton Blanding stood fifth in the South in the women's event after topping 3.45 meters at the Eastern Shore Challenge. Meanwhile, in other field events,
CJ Reeders ranked fourth in the men's triple jump, while Christopher Newport's throwers earned three All-Region citations. On the men's side,
Joe Kilama was fourth in the discus, while
Tyler Palmer was fifth in the shot put.
Mazie Clark also excelled in the shot after ranking third in the women's event with a 12.00-meter toss at the New Captains Classic.
Capping off the honorees, three other Captains were celebrated for their work in distance events. In the 1500,
Daniel Ferrante was third for the men, while
Logan Funk ranked fourth for the women.
Eric Speeney also slotted fourth in the men's 10,000 after completing the race in 31:48.62 at the Colonial Relays.
