TEMPE, Ariz. --The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2022 Academic Awards on Wednesday, listing Christopher Newport men's tennis as an All-Academic Team selection for the fifth time in the last five seasons. Leading the way, a group of eight Captains were selected as Scholar-Athletes by the organization in the same release, including Ryan Macy, who becomes just the third four-time honoree in program history. 

A year after setting a program record with eleven Scholar-Athlete selections, the Captains continued to showcase dominance in the classroom with eight picks in 2021-22. Macy wrapped his career as an ITA Scholar-Athlete in all four seasons playing for Christopher Newport, joining only Nick Ruzicka and Dominic Lacombe before him. Matthew Dubuque and Dawson Driscoll picked up the certificate for the third time and also earning Scholar-Athlete honors this season for the second time are Bently Goodwin, Tyler Hyun and Eddy Porsmyr Hansen. Rounding out the CNU selections are Peter Karanski and Ashton Legum as each picked up his first career selection. 

In total, 940 Division III Men's Tennis student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and 125 men's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction. 

Criteria to be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete includes having a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year and eligible to compete during the season. To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, the program must have a team GPA of 3.2 or above, all student-athletes should be included on the institutional eligibility form, and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the year. 

The ITA is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College. The ITA administer a comprehensive awards and rankings program for men's and women's varsity players, coaches, and teams in all divisions, providing recognition for their accomplishments on and off the court.
