Eight Captains Receive CSC Academic All-District Honors in Track & Field and Cross Country

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- After starring both in and out of the classroom at Christopher Newport during the 2022-23 campaign, eight Captains were named to the Academic All-District Track & Field and Cross Country Team, which was announced by the College Sports Communicators on Wednesday afternoon.

Headlining the group, Adrianna DeSantis earned the honor for the third straight year, joining former legends Zoe Stauffer and Aimee Gibbs as the only three-time recipients in program history. Meanwhile, Daniel Ferrante received the award for the second consecutive year, placing him alongside Zach Campbell as the only men to haul in multiple accolades.

In addition to DeSantis, Sarah Anstice, Mae Savoie, Lindsey Stirling, and Casey Yenyo were celebrated on the women's side, while Cooper Albright and John Vogel joined Ferrante as the men's honorees.

The eight total selections marked the most in school history.

In order to be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA while serving as a key contributor during the 2022-23 campaign. With their All-District honors, the eight Captains are now eligible for Academic All-American plaudits, which will be announced later in the summer.

Founded in 1952, the CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-American program recognizes standouts from all sports across all divisions of the NCAA. There are over 20,000 total nominations every year with fewer than 10 percent of those student-athletes receiving the nation's highest academic honor.

Honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Albright orchestrated an award-winning campaign in 2023. The biology major hauled in All-Conference and All-State accolades for his performance in the indoor 800. Overall, the senior standout is a four-time All-Conference performer in his career and walked away with a league title for his work on the indoor 4x400-relay in 2022.

Excelling throughout her senior campaign, Anstice starred in both cross country and track & field. The biochemistry major kicked off her year by placing in the top-50 in the 6k at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships with a PR of 27:58.9. Later, she capped off her year with a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-relay while helping the women claim the league title at the outdoor track & field championships.

A reigning Academic All-American and the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, DeSantis punctuated her tenure with another dominant season with the Captains. One of the league's top sprinters, the neuroscience major swept the conference titles in the indoor and outdoor 400 while also competing on the victorious indoor 4x400-relay. Overall, she is a six-time league champion and 16-time All-Conference honoree.

Dominant in the fall, Ferrante qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first time in his career while securing All-Conference and All-Region nods for his efforts. Just as successful in the distance events on the track & field team, the computer science major won his second straight league title in the outdoor 1500. In just three seasons at Christopher Newport, the junior standout is already a three-time conference champion on the track.

Named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Savoie earned All-League accolades in the fall for the second straight season. Equally impressive on the track & field team, the biochemistry major hauled in All-Conference laurels in the indoor 3000, indoor DMR, and outdoor 800 in 2023. Historically great, she owns the school's 4k record in cross country and slots in the school's top-10 all-time in the indoor mile as well as the outdoor 800 and 1500.

Electric in the sprints, Stirling has been especially successful as an award-winning member of Christopher Newport's top relay units. The business administration major walked away with All-Conference honors in the outdoor 4x100-relay as a senior in 2023 after leading the foursome to the league championship in 2021. Overall, she is a four-time All-Conference selection in her career, including a second-place finish in the indoor 60 at the conference meet in 2022.

A decorated standout in both cross country and track & field, Vogel earned All-League citations in the fall and spring. During the cross country season, the history major placed 15th at the conference championships just one month after setting a new PR in the 8k with a mark of 25:22.0 at the Paul Short Run. In the spring, the reigning Virginia State Rookie of the Year secured his fifth career All-League award in track & field after finishing second in the 3000-steeplechase.

After a top-40 finish at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships in the fall, Yenyo came back with a starring role on the track & field team. The social work major earned All-State nods in both the indoor 4x400-relay and DMR. Additionally, the fourth-year standout walked away with a conference championship as a member of the 4x400-relay and wrapped up her tenure with five total All-League accolades, including a crown in the indoor 400 in 2022.
